Content	From “Background on this ‘Fallout Shelter Plan’”: The federal office of Civil Defense contracted with Stanford Research Institute to establish a pilot program which would lead to a “shelter plan” being prepared by one city in each of our 50 states. Stanford Research, in turn, subcontracted with planning commissions, or other agencies, in each state for the actual plan preparation. The purpose of this program is to maximize the number of lives that could be saved in the event of a nuclear attack by providing protection from fallout for our citizens. To acquaint the responsible agencies from each contract city with background on this program, training sessions were held throughout the United States before any actual planning work began. As work progressed, continuous contacts were made with local, state, and regional civil defense agencies, and district and division offices of the Corps of Engineers. Once completed, the plans from each of the 50 states will be used a background in helping each city in the United States to prepare a similar fallout shelter plan.
